Holmes Foods uses approximately 12 million gallons of water a month to process chickens.  Once it has been filtered it is pumped into the lagoons located on our hay farm & feeder calf ranch.  The water travels through three (3) lagoons.  This allows for any solids to settle to the bottom of the lagoon and naturally filters the water.  The water, then, flows into a fourth lagoon which is called a pump pond.  Water from the pump pond is used to irrigate the approved land used to produce hay and grow grass for cattle.  The permit granted by the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission regulates irrigation of the land.  Holmes Foods owns the equipment necessary to cut and bail hay and can produce approximately 4,500 round bails of hay annually or run in the neighborhood of 250 feeder calves with finish weights between 800 and 1000 pounds.  The hay is, then, sold to local ranchers and the cattle are sold to local buyers.

"The water comes from the plant.  It dumps into the first tank, then, from where it goes into the first tank to the second tank, you hit the valve on the opposite corner going into the second tank open.  Then, from the second to the third tank you hit it on the opposite corner of it and you switch that around about twice a month and it helps purify the water.  Then, we irrigate out of the fourth pond to get the grass growing.  Cut and bail hay off of it when it is ready to go about every 21 to 30 days."
